Josef Zlamal, born in 1983 in Šternberk, Czech Republic, is among the most promising contemporary Czech artists. He lives and works in Prague and Šternberk.
Josef Zlamal's paintings, drawings, sculptures and films confront the viewer with a world of uncertainty. Zlamal searches for light through darkness, offering new perspectives on history and geopolitical issues connected to human existence and life.
Natural respect for the experience of previous generations plays a vital role in Zlamal's strategy. He sees art as an ideal language for studying, synthesizing, and communicating across time, language, and geography.
Fascinated by the way how various elements (or forces) affect our existence, he confronts a range of phenomena such as contemplation, enlightenment, and transcendence. He reveals what lies behind the commonly perceived and materializes the invisible.
Josef Zlamal's work has been exhibited in the company of both contemporary and classic masters (e.g. Otto Dix, Lucas Cranach, Arnulf Rainer, Jiri Georg Dokoupil, Daniel Richter, Rona Pondick, or Marc Quinn) in private institutions as well as at leading public museums (e.g. Power Station of Art Shanghai or Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig).
Since 2009 Zlamal has been actively collaborating with his mother Blanka Zlamalova (Studio Zlamal) on projects involving art in architecture and public space. Collaboration plays a vital role in his practice, as seen in his joint work with fashion designer Andrea Vytlacilova (since 2019).
Zlamal is fascinated, inspired, and irritated by artists such as Laurent Grasso, William Kentridge, Richard Mosse, Thomas Schütte, Isaac Julien, Arthur Jafa, Jan Fabre, Georg Baselitz, Kara Walker, Alberto Giacometti, Fritz Lang, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Sergei Eisenstein, Ingmar Bergman, Edvard Munch, Alfred Kubin, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Thomas Bernhard, Karel Capek, Matthias Grünewald, and Hieronymus Bosch.
Zlamal is regularly being featured in various media, more recently in Mf Dnes, Česká Televize, Lidové noviny, TV Nova and Český Rozhlas. More in PRESS.
Josef Zlamal’s work is part of many international private collections across Europe and is being acquired by prestigious private art collectors (i.e. COLLETT Prague | Munich, Elgiz Collection and DrAK Foundation) and also Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig.
